Strong First Half Leads Cardinals Over Southern Indiana

The William Jewell women's soccer team moved to 4-3-3, and 2-3-1 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as they defeated the Screaming Eagles of Southern Indiana on Sunday afternoon by a score of 2-1.

Jewell got the scoring going early as freshman Emma Baldridge grabbed her third goal of the season at 20:05 mark of the first period. The shot bounced off the right side bar of the goal and bounced out but had enough backspin to roll back into the net.

Just over 15 minutes later at the 35:31 USI's Olivia Wilde was called for a foul in the box giving Jewell a penalty kick. Senior Jade Gifford scored her fourth goal of the season putting it past the goalkeeper on the left side to put the Cardinals up 2-0 at the break.

The Screaming Eagles got on the board at the 52:06 mark on a goal from Haley Rheinlander to cut the lead in half.

Jewell managed nine shots in the second period but couldn't find the net. Along with her early goal, Gifford led with four shots, two on goal, and one assist for Jewell. Baldridge added three shots, all three on goal. Lexi Pommer, Aspen Hawkins, McKenzie Kellogg, and Alyson Galler each added a shot.

Sophomore Jordan Lewis upped her record to 4-3-1 while totaling two saves.

The Cardinals will be on the road next weekend as they travel to Quincy University for a matchup with the Hawks beginning at 5:00 p.m.
