The William Jewell men's soccer team opened the 2015-2016 athletic year by hosting Newman University Thursday night in a non-conference matchup. The Cardinals fell 3-2 and fall to 0-1 on the early season.
In the fifteenth minute Newman's Taylor Henry would open the scoring with a goal from fifteen yards out to put the Jets up 1-0. Just over a minute later
Quinton Conyers would score the first goal of the season for William Jewell on a penalty kick. That would be the only goals of the first half with the score tied 1-1.
Newman scored twice in a span of fifteen minutes to take a 3-1 lead. Jewell cut the lead to 3-2 on a goal from
Tristan Morgan. Newman's defense stepped up and held off the Cards the rest of the way.
The Cardinals led the Jets 10-9 in shots and
Joe Keeven recorded two saves.
Jewell will return to action on Friday, September 11 as they open Great Lakes Valley Conference play hosting Drury University at 7:30 p.m.
