The William Jewell women's soccer team got into the win column on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 victory over Upper Iowa. Jewell now stands at 1-0-1 while Upper Iowa falls to 0-1-1.
At the 12:42 mark in the opening half
Emily Monroe knocked in her second goal of the season to give the Cardinals an early lead. Just over ten minutes later
Aspen Hawkins got her first goal with a cross field kick from nearly 20 yards out to put Jewell up 2-0 at the half.
At the 71:40 mark of the second period the Peacock's Madie Edwards scored to get Upper Iowa on the board and cut the lead in half at 2-1. Â
The two teams traded open opportunities late in the second half but neither scored.
The Cardinals outshot Upper Iowa 13-7 including allowing just four shots on goal from the Peacocks.
Senior
Jade Gifford posted a game-high six shots, including two on goal, to go along with one assist.
Emma Baldridge and
McKenzie Kellogg also each recorded one shot, while
Hayley White had two. In her first start of the year, sophomore
Jordan Lewis posted three saves.
Jewell will open Great Lakes Valley Conference play next week as they host Drury University on Friday, September 11. The women's game will kick off at 5:00 p.m. with the men to follow.
