Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | JaeLynn Ellison, Assistant Sports Information Director

Shooting Struggles Leads Cardinals to Loss at UIS

For the second game in a row the William Jewell women's basketball team jumped out to an early lead only to see their opponent work their way back and eventually earn a late win. On Saturday the Cardinals dropped a 63-52 decision to Illinois Springfield to fall to 6-11 overall, 1-5 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

In the opening quarter, Jewell broke out to a 12-7 lead before USI came roaring back to take a 27-24 advantage into the half.

The Cardinals battled back to take a 34-33 lead at the 4:22 mark of the third period and again at 39-38 but could never seperate themselves. A traditional three-point play by USI's Ashley McHenry gave the Prairie Stars 42-39 lead, one they never relinquished.

USI pushed the lead as far as 13 as the Cardinals again went cold in the fourth quarter. Meagan Paul connected on a three-point shot with just under two minutes remaining followed by a free throw from Kelsey Nickerson and basket from Maddie Nelson to help the Jewell try to crawl back into the game but it was too little too late as they were forced to foul. USI hit all four of their free throw attempts in the final minute.

The story of the day for Jewell was the poor shooting. Despite the Prairie Stars entering the game ranked fifteenth in the GLVC in field goal percentage they produced a 43 percent clip on Saturday, six percentage points above their season average. The Cardinals, the only team ranked below USI in the GLVC in shooting, was held to just 31 percent, well below their season average. The Cardinals were also hindered by a 62 percent mark from the free throw line.

Nelson led the Cardinals with 12 points and six rebounds while Blair Klostermann added 11 points. Paul and junior Chris Keys each chipped in eight points. Logan Antenen also pulled six rebounds, all on the offensive end.

The Cardinals will have a quick turnaround as they play host to Rockhurst on Monday at 5:30 p.m. in the Mabee Center.
