The William Jewell College women's basketball team returned home for the first of a three game home stand against Rockhurst University in a Great Lakes Valley Conference matchup. Jewell ended a two game losing skid defeating the Hawks 68-49.
The Cardinals improve to 7-11 overall and 2-5 in GLVC play while the Hawks fall to 10-5 and 3-4 in league play.
The Cardinals came out on fire in the first quarter and built a 9 point lead on the strength of two three point baskets off the bench from Megan Paul.
Jewell continued the momentum in the second quarter and built a lead as large as 15 before a three from Rockhurst cut the lead to 12 and the score at halftime saw the Cards up 37-25.
Madison Campbell scored 13 first half points going 5-11 from the field. The Cardinals also held the Hawks to 29 percent field goal shooting and forced 9 first half turnovers.
The Cardinals started the third quarter on a 12-3 run and held the Hawks with out a field goal for the first five minutes of the quarter. Jewell also forced six turnovers in the quarter and built a 57-33 lead after three.
Jewell's lead was to much for the Hawks to overcome in the fourth quarter.
Maddie Nelson led the Cards with a double double of 14 points and a game high 17 rebounds. Campbell finished the night with 15 points and 9 rebounds.
The Cardinals held a significant rebounding advantage of 55-29 on the evening.
The Cardinals will continue GLVC play on Thursday as they host Missouri S&T with tip-off set for 5:30 p.m.
