Box Score The William Jewell College men's basketball team fell in a Great Lakes Valley Conference duel against nearby Rockhurst University by a score of 86-78 on Monday night in the Mabee Center.
Rockhurst surged out to an early lead, but the Cardinals battled back to tie the game at 21-21 with eight minutes left in the half. The Hawks then rode a 16-2 run into the half to take a 37-23 halftime lead. The Cardinals outscored the Hawks in the second half, cutting the lead to as little as five before ultimately falling by an eight point margin.
Despite the loss, the Cardinals shot the ball very well from the field, making 50% of their shots on the night. In an otherwise back-and-forth game, Jewell was plagued by a fateful 16-2 run before the halftime break.
Darius Tomlin led the Cardinals in scoring, pouring in 23 points on the night.
Larry Fitzgerald chipped in with a double-double, recording 10 points and 10 rebounds.
Rockhurst forward Dominique Washington led the offensive attack for the Hawks, scoring 22 points on the evening. Malachi Nix and Josh Roberts contributed 17 and 12 points, respectively.
With the loss, the Cardinals move to 5-10 on the year and fall to 0-7 in conference play. Rockhurst improves to 9-6 overall and 4-3 in conference with the victory.
The Cardinals return to action on Thursday, January 21, when they play host to Missouri S&T at 7:30 p.m. in the Mabee Center.
