Box Score The William Jewell College men's basketball team secured their first Great Lakes Valley Conference win of the season, defeating Missouri S&T University 93-89 in a high-scoring affair Thursday night in the Mabee Center. With the win, the Cardinals move to 6-10 on the year and 1-7 in GLVC play. Missouri S&T drops to 7-10 overall and 3-5 in conference play. 
 
Despite shooting 70 percent from the field in the first half, the Cardinals trailed the Miners 50-46 at the halftime break. However, Jewell surged out of the break, grabbing the lead with a 12-0 run to start the half. The Miners would battle back, eventually tying the game at 84 with two minutes to play. Larry Fitzgerald would then score Jewell's next seven points, allowing the Cardinals to secure the victory.
 
The Cardinals shot 53 percent from the field for the game. Additionally, they were able to make clutch free throws down the stretch. After starting the game 4-10 from the free throw line, the Cardinals closed out the game by shooting 7-10 in the last two minutes, including Patrick Whelan going 11-14 on the evening.  
 
Fitzgerald led the high-powered Cardinal offense with a career-high 34 points. Whelan chipped in 19 points for the Cardinals. GLVC rebounds per game leader Austin Regier pulled down a game-high 13 rebounds.
 
Allen Billinger led the Miners in scoring, putting in 18 points on the evening. Juwan Miller and Zach Ellis each scored 15 points in the losing effort. 
 
The Cardinals seek to ride their momentum into their next GLVC matchup against Drury University on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. in the Mabee Center.
