The William Jewell College men's basketball secured an impressive 87-84 victory over Drury University on Saturday afternoon at the Mabee Center.
Jewell raced out to a 37-32 halftime lead, capitalizing on a 54 percent shooting percentage from the field. Jewell would come out of the break hot, extending their lead to as much as 13 early in the second half. The Panthers would battle back, but the Cardinals would always respond, never allowing Drury to take the lead.
The Cardinals demonstrated hot shooting across the board, making 52 percent of their field goals and 53 percent of their three point attempts. Additionally, Jewell benefitted from stellar free-throw shooting, making 29 of their 35 attempts for the day.
Darius Tomlin was once again the head of the Cardinals offensive attack, scoring a career high 27 points on the afternoon and icing the game with two clutch free throws with under a minute to play. Jordan Tanner also set a career high, contributing 14 points to aid the winning effort, while Patrick Whelan added 19 on 4-6 from behind the three point line.
Drury's Kameron Bundy scored 30 points. Tevin Foster poured in 21 points for the game.
Jewell's second consecutive win moves them to 7-10 on the year and 2-7 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play. Drury falls to 11-6 for the season and 6-3 in the GLVC.
Jewell travels to St. Louis take on the University of Missouri- St. Louis at 7:30 p.m. on Thursday in their next GLVC matchup.
