Cardinals Swept at Truman State

The William Jewell volleyball team lost their second consecutive game as they were swept on Saturday at the hands of Truman State by scores of 25-18, 25-22, and 25-18. Jewell drops to 9-7 overall and 3-3 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.

Jewell opened the match by spotting the Bulldogs a 8-2 advantage before making a run and eventually tying the game at 15 on an ace from Olivia Tolberd. The Cards took a short lived lead on a kill by Madeline Johnson before three consecutive errors allowed Truman to jump back in front 19-16 and forced a timeout from Carolyn Raynes. Truman continued to roll outscoring Jewell 6-2 over the final eight points to take the 25-18 win. In the opening set the Cardinals managed just a .062 attack percentage compared to a .429 mark by Truman State.

In set two Jewell trailed majority of the set but stayed closed before the Bulldogs made a seperation at 15-22 and forced a Cardinal timeout. Three consecutive points on kills from Johnson and Leslie Booth and another Tolberd ace forced Truman to take a timeout of their own. The Bulldogs got to set point before the Cardinals put together another small run to pull within 24-21 before a service error gave Truman the two set lead.

In the final set Jewell again spotted Truman a lead at 12-6 on five consecutive Bulldog kills. The Cardinals pulled within one at 14-15 on two Truman errors and kills from Booth and Jenna Rau to cause TSU head coach Ben Briney to call a timeout after which the Bulldogs rolled to a 25-18 win.

Booth Jewell with eight kills followed by Paige Cunningham with six. Tolberd led Jewell defensively with a game-high 26 digs to go along with two aces.

Up next the Cardinals will travel to crosstown rival Rockhurst on Tuesday night at 7:00 p.m.
