The William Jewell College men's soccer team hosted University of Illinois-Springfield in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at Greene Stadium on Friday evening. The Cardinals lost a 2-1 heartbreaker in overtime to fall to 2-11 overall and 2-9 in the GLVC. The win moves UIS to 6-7-1 overall and 5-5-1 in league play.
The first half proved to be a very physical half. Jewell's Hunter short was ejected at the 27:28 mark after receiving his second yellow card of the contest. The Cardinals would then have to play a man short the rest of the half and the game.
The Cards hung in and outshot the Prairie Stars 8-5 in the first half and went into halftime deadlocked at zero.
The second half was just as physical but Jewell's
Charlie Parrish provided a big spark when he put the Cards on top 1-0 at 56:53 off an assist from
Blake Lines.
Jewell was then handed three more cards including a red card on
Jordan Lindsey which put Jewell at a two- man down disadvantage. UIS took advantage and scored in the 87th minute to send the game into overtime.
The Prairie Stars would win the game at the 94:35 mark in overtime on Mario Falsone's fifth goal of the season.
The Cardinals will continue their home stand on Sunday when they host McKendree University. Kick-off is set for 2:30 p.m.
