For the first time since 2012, the William Jewell volleyball team has posted a double-digit win season, earning their tenth victory with a 3-0 sweep of Lake Superior State by scores of 25-19, 25-20, 26-24. In the evening session, the Cardinals dropped a three set match to Ohio Dominican 25-8, 25-15, 25-20 to move to 10-11 overall.
In the morning session, Jewell dominated early jumping out to a ten point advantage behind three kills from
Paige Cunningham and two from
Grace Miller. The Lakers went on a 9-2 run of their own to pull within four at 19-15 before Jewell closed the set strong behind two kills from
Raechel Meisinger.
In the opener, the Cardinals hit a game-high .289, committing just five errors.
In set two, the teams battled back-and-forth until a 5-0 Cardinal run made the seperation.
Leslie Booth was on fire during the run posting three kills and six overall in the set. The Lakers again went on a small run to pull within four but Jewell shut the door with two more kills from Booth and aided by three Lake State errors.
Lake State attempted a comeback in the third set as they remained within two points of Jewell the entire set before taking a 23-19 lead. After a timeout from
Carolyn Raynes, Jewell went on a 7-1 run to complete the come-from-behind victory 26-24. Booth collected two more kills, while
Olivia Tolberd posted an ace to help spur the Cards to the win.
Overall the Cardinals hit hit just above their season average at .179 but held the Lakers to a .106 clip. Jewell also collected ten blocks compared to just three by LSSU.
Booth led the Cardinals with 12 kills, followed closely by Cunningham with 11.
Madeline Johnson led the team with five total blocks while Cunningham had four and Booth three. Defensively, Jewell had three players with double-digit digs led by Tolberd's 18.
Stefanie Richterkessing collected 13 while
Codi Winslow posted a season-high 12.
In the nightcap, Jewell struggled early and often against Ohio Dominican dropping the opening set 25-8 after hitting -.088 and posting just four kills.
Set two saw the Cardinals and Panthers play even until a 5-0 run by Ohio Dominican put the Panthers on top 17-12. Jewell battled but ODU strung together seven points to end the set 25-15.
In set three, despite hitting .216, Jewell was forced to battle from behind as ODU again jumped out to a large lead at 17-10. The Cardinals went on a bit of a run and pulled within 23-18 behind kills from
Amy Lindhorst and
Madeline Johnson. A Jewell error followed by an ODU kill ended the set 25-20 and the match 3-0.
Overall the Cardinals managed just an .087 attack percentage while the Panthers posted a .337 mark. Jewell was also hindered by eight service reception errors and four ball handling errors.
Cunningham led the team with seven kills while Johnson collected four blocks. Tolerd led the defense with 14 digs.
Jewell will wrap up the Crossover Tournament tomorrow afternoon as they take on Northern Michigan at 1:30 p.m.
