The William Jewell College football team hosted Southwest Baptist University today in a Great Lakes Valley Conference contest at Greene Stadium.
The Cardinals dominated the Bearcats in time of possession 37:26 to 22:34 and led in total yards 550-537. It was the Bearcats' quick strike ability however, that helped them dominate the scoreboard and came away with a 51-28 victory. The loss moves the Cardinals to 0-7 overall and 0-5 in the GLVC. The Bearcats improve to 6-1 overall and 5-1 in league play.
SBU displayed their offense prowess on their first drive when quarterback TJ Edwards found wide receiver Kendrick Payne for 29 yards on a big third and nine.
Three plays later running back Bubba Jenkins scored the first of his three touchdowns from 15 yards out to give the Bearcats a 7-0 lead.
The Cardinals first possession saw them drive all the way to the Bearcat 8-yard line but quarterback
Brad Strauss was intercepted in the end zone by Quinlan Gaines and SBU took over on downs.
The Cardinals stopped the Bearcats and got the back and drove again but this time Strauss connected on a beautiful 28-yard scoring strike to
Bulla Graft to tie the game 7-7.
On the ensuing drive, Southwest Baptist showed their quick strike ability when running back Bubba Jenkins burst through the middle virtually untouched for a 76-yard rushing touchdown which put them on top 14-7.
Jewell started another drive down the field as the first quarter came to a close. The Cardinals reached SBU's 10-yard line but were stopped on third down.
Brandon Womack's 27-yard field goal however, was blocked giving the ball back to the Bearcats.
The Cardinals would get the ball back but would be forced to punt. Jewell punter
Rhett Purling's 15-yard punt put the Bearcats in business and three plays later Edwards rushed in from 31 yards out to give SBU a 21-7 lead.
Southwest Baptist added on to their lead (28-7) during their next drive when Jenkins scored from 9-yards out on a drive that lasted only 1:09 on just 5 plays.
SBU would tack on a field goal from 28 yards out to go into halftime up 31-7.
Jewell would start the third quarter with a quick three and out and the Bearcats would once again capitalize with a four play drive in only 52 seconds when Edwards completed his first touchdown pass of the game to Cassian Foreman from 8-yards out that put SBU up 37-7.
On Jewell's next possession Strauss was knocked out the game and replaced by sophomore
Collin Rugg. Facing a huge fourth and five from midfield Rugg found
Anthony Mullins who hauled in a 32-yard gain to put the Cards inside the red zone. Two plays later running back Derrick Strzelecki scored the first of his two touchdowns to cut SBU's lead to 37-14.
Jewell would get the ball back after Womack's onside kick was recovered by teammate
Andrew Pence and after driving to the SBU 8-yard line the Cardinals turned it over on downs. Just when all the momentum was thought to be lost the Cards got a break when Jenkins' fumble was recovered by Jewell's
Zach Haynes at the SBU 13-yard line.
Two plays later Strzelecki found the end zone again and cut the lead to 37-21.
Both teams then went three and out for two straight possessions before the Bearcats started to pull away by finding the end zone again. Cory Hanger ran in from 18-yards out that put SBU up 44-21 at the end of the third quarter.
After yet another three and out the Bearcats again struck quickly on 3 plays and 45 yards that took only 45 seconds when Edwards found Matt Lechuga from 15-yards out which put the Bearcats up 51-21.
Two drives later, Strauss found
Cody Edwards from 40-yards out which produced the winning 51-28 margin.
This was the second straight week the Cardinal defense had given up 50 or more points to an opponent.
Strauss finished the game 27-36 for 367 yards with one touchdown and one pick. Mullins and Graft each went over 100 receiving yards as Mullins was 10-156 and Graft was 8-130.
SBU's Jenkins rushed 21 times for 181 yards and three scores while Edwards was 20-32 for 304 yards.
The Bearcats defense also produced seven sacks on the afternoon while the Cardinals recorded two.
Jewell will start a two-game road swing as they travel next Saturday to Kirksville, Mo., to take on GLVC leading Truman State. Kick-off is set for 2:00 p.m.
