The William Jewell volleyball team mounted a third set rally to comeback from eight points down to tie the set at 25 before falling 27-25 and 3-0 in the match to Truman State on Friday night. The Cardinals drop to 11-20 overall and 4-13 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Jewell put in their best performance of the night in the final set posting a .205 attack percentage behind
Paige Cunningham's four kills to spark the rally. Jewell struggled early in each set falling behind by as many as eight in set three before a kill and ace from
Madeline Johnson began to turn the momentum. After pulling within two, Cunningham and Johnson put down kills followed by a kill and ace from
Amy Lindhorst pulled them within one at 23-22. Truman State's Jasmine Brown gave the Bulldogs set point with a kill but fthree straight kills from Jewell pulled the Cardinals ahead 25-24. However, three errors ended the Jewell rally and gave Truman the set 27-25.
In both the opening sets the Cardinals allowed Truman to open leads of seven and five before mounting rallies. In the opener, down 9-2, the Bulldogs aided Jewell's comeback, committing five consecutive errors to pull the score to 10-8. A kill from
Raechel Meisinger tied the game at 14 before Truman went on a 4-0 run followed by a 3-0 run from Jewell. After TSU took a 21-17 lead, the Cardinals rallied and pulled ahead 22-21 before being outscored 4-2 and dropping the opening set 26-24.
Set two saw Jewell fall behind early once again but the Cardinals also mounted an comeback to tie the set at 18. From there however, the Bulldogs outscored Jewell 7-1 to take the set 25-19.
The Cardinals were led by
Grace Miller's nine kills, followed by seven from Johnson.
Olivia Tolberd and
Stefanie Richterkessing each posted double-digit digs with 23 and 12 respectively.
As a team, Jewell hit .157 but allowed a .233 clip from the Bulldogs.
Jewell will wrap up the 2016 season on Saturday as they host Quincy University at 3:00 p.m. in the Mabee Center.
