Newman University turned a four point first half advantage into 32 point margin by the final buzzer to down the William Jewell women's basketball team 75-43 in non-conference play on Saturday afternoon in Wichita, Kan. Jewell falls to 4-4 overall, while the Jets improve to 9-2.
The Cardinals were able to stay close in the first quarter, trailing just 15-11 after the first ten minutes. From there Newman used a 54 percent shooting percentage on the day to open a ten point lead and continued to add throughout the remainder of the contest.
In the second quarter
Hayden Butler hit two free throws at the 7:51 mark after which the Cardinals went cold and did not score again until a
Kayla Harrell three with 1:56 remaining in the half. The Jets went on a 5-0 run before
Katie Finn hit a three point shot of her own to bring the Cards within ten, 31-21, at the break.
After the intermission Newman came out firing once again to pull ahead 41-21 before two Finn free throws ended the run. The Jets outscored Jewell 17-8 over the final five minutes of the third period to take a 58-31 lead.
Newman continued to have the hot hand in the final quarter expanding the advantage to as many as 33 before coming to the final margin of 75-43.
Jewell saw their shooting woes continue, hitting just 22 percent of their field goals and 26 percent from behind the three-point line. After making just 57 percent of their free throws in the first half the Cards did improve to 80 percent in the second half, making 12-15 overall.
Butler led the Cardinals with ten points, followed by Finn with eight points, two rebounds, and two assists.
Jewell returns home next weekend for a non-conference match up with Avila University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. and will round out the first semester schedule at Central Missouri on Monday, Dec. 19 in Warrensburg, Mo.
