The William Jewell College men's basketball team played their first Great Lakes Valley Conference road game on Wednesday night and fell to Rockhurst University 83-77.

The Cardinals have now lost four straight (3-5) and remain winless in the GLVC at 0-3. The Hawks even their record to 4-4 and win for the first time in league play (1-2). Â
The Cards jumped out to an early 6-2 lead before Rockhurst went on their own 6-2 run to tie things up at 8. With 10:28 to play Jewell built their biggest lead of the half 20-15 off a lay up from
Jorge Perez-Laham. The Hawks then went on a 9-3 run and would go on to build their biggest lead of the game (42-32) with 19 seconds to play before halftime. Â
Patrick Whelan's layup would cut the Hawks lead to eight at the break. Â
Rockhurst would lead by 11 only to see Jewell come all the way back and tie the game 52-52 with 13:14 to play. Â
Whelan again found an opening in the lane and his layup gave Jewell their first lead of the second half 54-52 with 12:44 to play. Rockhurst then went on a 6-0 run and led for the rest of the way. Jewell did make it interesting cutting the lead to two with just over three minutes to play but the Hawks would hold on for the win.  Â
After scoring a career high 17 against Pittsburg State last month,
Emil Ostafiiciuc eclipsed his career high and scored 20. Â
Patrick Whelan tallied 21 for Jewell. Â
The Cardinals will take on University of Missouri Kansas City on Saturday at 4:00 p.m. at Municipal Auditorium. Â
