The William Jewell College women's basketball team's valiant comeback attempt fell just short on Thursday night in the Mabee Center, as they were defeated by Saint Joseph's College, 69-66. Jewell drops to 10-15 on the year and 5-9 in conference play with the loss. The win moves the Pumas to 16-8 overall and 9-5 in the conference.
The Cardinals struggled from the start, falling victim to 14 first half turnovers as they were outscored 33-21 by the Pumas. After a back and forth third quarter, the Cardinals started the fourth quarter on a tear, as Logan Antenen, Lindsey McCoy, and Kelsey Nickerson teamed up to make four threes on Jewell's first five possessions of the quarter, cutting the Pumas lead to five.
After trading buckets for most of the quarter, Nickerson would again come up clutch hitting a three-pointer with 20 seconds to play to put the Cardinals down two. Jewell proceeded to foul and the Pumas would make one free throw, but the Cardinals would be unable to make a game-tying three point attempt.
The Cardinals were plagued by turnovers, surrendering the ball 20 times over the course of the game. After not making any threes in the first half, Jewell was able to storm back with eight second half three-point field goals.
Antenen was the leading scorer for the Cardinals, putting in 16 points on the evening, including several clutch baskets in the fourth quarter. Nickerson and McCoy also aided the Cardinal comeback effort with strong fourth quarters, scoring 13 and 11 points, respectively.
The Pumas' offense was led by Lauren Davis, who scored 27 points for the game. Courtney Kvachkoff chipped in 20 points for the Pumas.
The Cardinals return to action on Saturday, as they play host to the University of Indianapolis at 1:00 p.m. in the Mabee Center.
