Jewell (4-2) dropped the opener on the trip Friday, 9-0, to Nebraska Kearney. The Cardinals then won two straight on Saturday 8-1 over Nebraska Wesleyan and 6-3 over Baker University.Â
The Cardinals also had to overcome a barrage of injuries to several players over the course of the three matches.Â
Jewell began Saturday with a dual against the Prairie Wolves of Nebraska Wesleyan. The Cards opened up the dual with a 3-0 lead after doubles. Jewell won five of the six singles matches with the only loss coming at No. 1 singles when
Lauren Huddlestun had to retire due to shoulder injury.
Against Baker, Jewell again got off to a great start in doubles coming out of doubles 3-0. Baker made things interesting with a three set win at No. 6 singles and again at No.1 singles when senior
Savannah Drew was forced to retire due to an ankle injury.Â
Lisanne Visseren won her match at No. 2 singles in straight sets and
Claire Mackay won the match clinching victory at No. 3 6-3, 6-3. Junior
Jessica Capps also won at No. 5 singles 6-4, 6-4. The weekend also saw the debut of freshman
Caroline Lane of Austin, Texas. Lane went 1-1 on the weekend and was also an exhibition winner in her match against Nebraska-Kearney.Â
The Cardinals will travel to Sioux Falls, S.D. on Friday, February 26 when they will take on South Dakota State University.Â
