The William Jewell softball team dropped two games to open the NSU Softball Festival, hosted by Northeastern State on Saturday. The Cardinals bowed to the host team 5-2 before dropping game two to Cameron University 17-10.
The morning game marked the second meeting between Jewell and the RiverHawks already this season with NSU winning both contests. The Cardinals opened the scoring in the second inning as senior
Morgan Olson singled to score
Ellie Ottensmeyer, who was pinch running for
Kelsey Morgan. In the third frame,
Madi Giles singled up the middle and later scored on a hit through the left side of the infield from
Brooke Bernard to put Jewell up 2-0 early.
The NSU bats were held quiet until the bottom of the fourth inning when they scored three on a home run from Hailey Acrey. The RiverHawks added two more runs in the sixth inning to take the 5-2 win.
Giles led the way for Jewell with three hits, follwed by
Nona Pauline with two.
Shelby McGraw took the loss to fall to 1-1 on the year, allowing five runs on six hits.
Game two was an onslaught of offense as Jewell and Cameron combined for 27 runs on 32 hits.
The game was already tied 2-2 after one inning as Cameron smacked a two-run home run and Bernard singled to center which drew a erant throw allowing
Maddie Greenstreet to score.
Phoebe Dabbour then doubled to score Pauline.
The Aggies exploded for nine runs in the top of the second inning to take an 11-2 lead. The Cards got five back over the next two innings on RBI from Pauline, Bernard, and Giles.
Jewell managed to pull within 14-10 before three runs by Cameron in the top of the seventh sealed the 17-10 win.
Freshman
Maddie Greenstreet totaled four hits in game two while scoring four runs. Giles and Pauline each posted two hits, including a double, to go along with three RBI while Bernard posted three hits and two RBI. Senior catcher
Aerin Creamer also finished with two hits.
Freshman
Anna Biondo (0-2) took the loss giving up five runs on six hits. McGraw, Greenstreet, and
Taylor Friesen also appeared in the circle for Jewell.
The Cardinals will continue play at the NSU Softball Festival tomorrow with two games against Lindenwood University and Midwestern State (Texas) at 11:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. respectively.
