The William Jewell women's basketball team spotted No. 23 Quincy a 15 point lead in the first quarter that could not be overcome despite a furious second half rally. The Cardinals fell 68-57 to drop to 10-18 overall, and 5-12 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
The Hawks came out on fire going 11-24 from the field and 5-12 from behind the arc, while the Cardinals shot a dismal 17 percent from the floor in the opening half. Sophomore point guard
Hayden Butler prevented things from getting out of hand in the second quarter as she scored eight points, all from the free throw line.
Coming out of the break with a 19 point deficit the Cardinals put together a string of buckets but each time they were answered by Quincy. It wasn't until the fourth quarter that things began to unravel for the Hawks and Jewell came roaring back. The Cardinals put together a 9-2 run to pull as close as eight late in the game on three point shots from
Zinka Duric and
Logan Antenen.Â
The two teams traded points over the final two minutes preventing Jewell from pulling the upset.
Freshman
Madison Campbell led the Cardinals with 16 points, three assists, and three steals. Butler added a career-high 13, including going 8-10 from the free throw line. Antenen and
Maddie Nelson grabbed seven and nine rebounds respectively, as Jewell outrebounded the Hawks 41-40.
The Cardinals will finish out the regular season on the road on Thursday at crosstown rival Rockhurst at 5:30 p.m.
