Baseball Finishes Weekend 4-0

The William Jewell College baseball team evened their record to 4-4 after sweeping four games in Arlington Texas this weekend.

In game one on Friday against Arlington Baptist, the Cardinals earned their first win of the year in domination fashion 10-0 over the host Patriots.

Andrew Miller was 3-5 with two RBI's and a two runs scored while Coleman Waheed was 2-2 including his first homerun of the year.

On the mound, senior Billy Kirkpatrick threw six innings only giving up two hits and struck out three to earn his first win of the season.

In the nightcap, the Cardinals took on NAIA opponent University of Science and Arts (Okla.).  The Drovers came into the contest riding a 13 game winning streak.

Jewell jumped out to a 4-0 lead with a single run in the first, two in the third and one in the fifth only to see the Drovers tie it up with four in the bottom of the fifth.

The Cardinals exploded for five runs in the top of the eighth keyed by a Garrett McKinzie homerun and a triple and RBI from Dylan Christie.  The Cards would hang on for a 9-6 victory.

Vijay Patel (1-1) got the win in relief of Austin Kretchmar.  Patel went three strong innings for the Cards giving up only one hit while striking out three.

On Saturday, the Cardinals and Drovers hooked up again in another close contest.   Jewell led 2-1 heading to the top of the eighth.  The Drovers came up with two runs to take a 3-2 lead and held that margin heading to the bottom of the ninth.

Tanner Foerschler lead off the inning with a walk and then the Drovers buckled down and recorded two quick outs.   Andrew Miller walked which set up some dramatics from newcomer cathcer Garrett McKinzie.  McKinzie delivered a clutch two out single to tie the game and send things to extra innings.

After holding the Drovers to no runs in the top of the tenth, Jewell started the bottom of the inning with a walk from Matej SuchaMike Leeper pinch hit for pitcher Chris Mancha and singled to put runners on first and second.  Foerschler another Cardinal newcomer came through with a single to score Sucha and give the Cardinals the 4-3 walk off win in extra innings.

Mancha (1-0) earned the win in relief tossing two innings giving up two hits.

The Cardinals then faced Arlington Baptist in the weekend finale on Sunday.

The Patriots grabbed an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first before Jewell tied things on solo shot from Sucha in the top of the fourth.  Arlington again took the lead with a single run in the fifth only to see Jewell tie things up in the top of the eighth of a solo homerun from Andrew Miller.  The Cards put the game away with three in the ninth off a key triple from Miller and a double from Dane Erbst.
