Women's Tennis Opens Spring Season With Dominating Performance

The William Jewell College women's tennis team opened the season with a 9-0 sweep of Concordia University on Friday at Clayview Country Club. 

The Cardinals won all the matches in straight sets and handily took care of the doubles in a dominating opening day performance.

Jewell's No. 1-ranked doubles team of senior Savannah Drew and junior Lauren Huddlestun beat Annie Horn and Katelinn Wurm 8-3.  Drew also took care of Horn 6-1,6-0 at No.1 singles while Huddlestun defeated Wurm 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2.
 
At No. 2 doubles, senior Sabrine Navarro and newcomer Lisanne Visseren shutout Alison Webel and Anna Kenney, 8-0.  Claire Mackay and another Cardinal rookie, Hannah Waine, were 8-1 winners over Kayla Smock and Katie Hertz at No. 3 doubles. 

Navarro, playing No. 3 singles defeated Ebel 6-1, 6-0 while Mackay shutout Hannah Boe 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4. 

Visseren and Waine won their first singles matches Cardinals in dominating fashion.  Visseren won her match 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5 while Waine swept Elizabeth Phillips 6-0, 6-0 at No. 6. 

The Cardinals (1-0) travel to Grand Island, Neb., on Friday, February 12 to take on Nebraska-Kearney at 2:00 p.m.
