Cardinals Overcome Slow Start to Sweep Southwest Baptist

The William Jewell College softball team swept a non-conference double-header from Southwest Baptist on Tuesday afternoon in Liberty, Mo. The Cardinals took game one 2-1, followed by a 7-3 victory in the nightcap. Jewell, who held their sixth annual Pink Game today, moves to 11-13 on the season while SBU falls to 13-21.

In the opener, the Bearcats jumped out to a 1-0 lead after back-to-back doubles from the Bearcat's Rachel Ray and Kaley Hansen.

Jewell's Shelby McGraw calmed down and went to battle with SBU's Kacey Ayers as both pitchers held their opponent quiet over the next three innings.

In the bottom of the fourth Brooke Bernard led off the inning with a solo home run to dead centerfield to tie the game for Jewell.

In the sixth inning, Phoebe Dabbour led off with a single up the middle and was pinch ran for by freshman Ellie Ottensmeyer who then swiped second base. Another freshman, Anna Biondo then came through for the Cardinals with an RBI double to right centerfield to give Jewell the 2-1 lead.

McGraw slammed the door with three straight outs in the top of the seventh to earn her seventh win of the year. In the complete game effort McGraw allowed just one earned run on eight hits with three strikeouts.

The Cardinals totaled seven hits as a team, all from different players, including a double from Madi Giles.

Game two started as another pitcher's duel with both teams collecting just one hit through the first two innings.

In the bottom of the third Megan Barnes doubled followed by walks to Giles and Nona Pauline to load the bases for Bernard who sent the first pitch she saw over the right center field fence for a grand slam and her second long ball of the day.

The Bearcats responded with a home run of their own as Caitlyn Cooner hit a two-run blast to bring SBU back within a 4-2 margin.

Two innings later the Cardinals got back-to-back singles from Biondo and Dabbour to put runners on the corners for McGraw who blasted the Card's third home run of the afternoon to right center field to break the game open at 7-2.

SBU got one run back on a solo home run from Cooner, her second of the day, leading to the final margin of 7-3 before Biondo closed the door.

The freshman Biondo went seven complete allowing just two earned runs on five hits while striking out seven.

Dabbour led the Cardinal offense with three hits, followed by Bernard with two to go along with four RBI.

Up next the Cardinals travel to St. Louis for GLVC matchups with No. 7 UMSL on Friday followed by a much improved Maryville team on Saturday.
