Cardinals Overpowered by No. 6 Missouri-St. Louis

The William Jewell softball team was swept on the road by No. 6 Missouri-St. Louis on Friday afternoon. The Tritons took game one 8-0 in five innings followed by a 11-1 win in six innings. The Cardinals drop to 11-15 overall, 3-7 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while UMSL moves to 31-2, and 9-1 in the GLVC.

In the opener, Hannah Perryman was dominant in the circle for the Tritons allowing just one hit by the Cardinals, a single coming off the bat of Aerin Creamer. Shelby McGraw and Anna Biondo also reached base via the hit-by-pitch and walk but that was all the Cardinals managed against the three time All-American.

UMSL jumped out to an early 6-0 lead scoring three runs in each of the first two innings and added two more in the fifth to take the run-rule victory.

Taylor Friesen took the loss to fall to 1-4 on the year after going four-plus innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits while striking out three and walking three.

In game two the Cardinals managed two hits off Perryman, including a double from Madi Giles and a home run from Aerin Creamer, the first of the season, and second of her career. The Creamer long ball gave Jewell and early 1-0 lead in the top of the second.

The Tritons quickly responded however with three runs in the bottom of the frame, and then added two in the fifth and tacked on six more in the sixth to take another shortened game victory.

Shelby McGraw took the loss and dropped to 7-8 on the year after allowing nine earned runs on nine hits in 5.2 innings of work. McGraw also struck out five while walking one.

The Cardinals return to action tomorrow as they are in Chesterfield Valley, Mo. to take on the Saints of Maryville University.
