Cardinals Edged by Maryville

The William Jewell softball team was swept by Maryville University on Saturday afternoon in Chesterfield Valley, Mo. by scores of 2-1 and 1-0 in eight innings. With the losses, Jewell drops to 11-17 overall, and 3-9 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference. The Saints improve to 22-4 and 10-2 in the GLVC.

In the opener, the Saints jumped out on top with one run in the first inning after an error and single.

In the top of the fourth, Brooke Bernard singled down the left field line and advanced to second after Anna Biondo was walked. Bernard came around to scored on a single to centerfield by Shelby McGraw to tie the game at one.

The two teams remained knotted until the bottom of the seventh when Maryville's Wendy Macias led off with a single through the left side. Macias was pinch ran for and the runner came around to score on a double to centerfield to end the game.

Bernard and Phoebe Dabbour led the Jewell offense with two hits each, while McGraw added the only Cardinal RBI. Megan Barnes also swiped two bases.

In the circle McGraw took the loss, falling to 7-9, after allowing just one earned run on four hits while striking out five and walking none. Macias ran her record to a perfect 12-0 for Maryville.

Game two was much like the first, a pitcher's duel between freshman Anna Biondo and Macias for Maryville, who each threw seven shutout innings forcing the contest to go to extras.

In the eighth inning Bernard drew a walk to give Jewell a baserunner but a double play up the middle ended the Cardinal rally.

In the bottom of the frame Maryville pulled out the walk off win for the second time, after a leadoff walk came around to score on two singles to take the 1-0 win.

Biondo (3-3) took the loss with Macias (13-0) getting the win for MU. Biondo went 7.2 innings, allowing just one earned run on four hits and one walk, while striking out four.

Offensively, senior Megan Barnes posted two of Jewell's three hits.

Jewell will have a rare midweek GLVC contest on Tuesday as they play host to crosstown rival Rockhurst University with a double header beginning at 2:00
