The William Jewell softball team suffered two one-run losses on Tuesday on the road at Northwest Missouri State. The Cardinals drop to 6-8 overall while the Bearcats move to 15-3.
In the opener
Shelby McGraw and Northwest's Kendle Schieber battled through seven complete innings of shutout softball for each. During that time the two pitchers allowed just eight and five hits respectively.
In the top of the eighth inning, with international tiebreaker rules in effect,
Megan Barnes reached third base with just one out. The Cardinals were unable to score Barnes however as a fly out and strikeout ended the inning.
In the Bearcat's half of the frame, they also sacrificed their runner to third but this time followed with a single up the middle by Rebecca Maher to give Northwest Missouri State the 1-0 walkoff win.
Overall the Cardinals were limited two just five hits, led by two from
Aerin Creamer, including a double. McGraw took the loss going 7.1 innings, allowing the one run (unearned), on nine hits, while striking out two.
In the nightcap the Jewell bats came alive as the Cards jumped out to a 5-1 lead after four innings.
Morgan Olson scored on a throwing error in the top of the second to put Jewell up 1-0 before the Bearcats tied the game in the bottom of the third.
The Cardinals loaded the bases in the fourth after Olson and
Phoebe Dabbour each singled and
Ellie Ottensmeyer reached on a fielder's choice. Olson then scored on an RBI groundout from
Megan Barnes.
Maddie Greenstreet then singled up the middle to score Dabbour and Ottensmeyer before advancing to third on a wild pitch and later scoring on a single from
Madi Giles give Jewell a comfortable 5-1 advantage.
The Bearcats battled back within one after scoring three runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. Down to their final three outs, a fielding error by the Cardinals, followed by a double down the left field line from Maher put two on with no outs for Alexis Kelsey who singled up the middle to give Northwest their second walkoff win of the day.
In game two Greenstreet led Jewell with two hits and two RBI while Dabbour also added two hits. McGraw took the loss allowing two runs on four hits in just over one inning of work. Greenstreet and
Taylor Friesen also appeared in the circle.
