Truman State Uses Late Runs to Sweep Cardinals

The William Jewell softball team was swept in a double header at the hands of Truman State University on Sunday afternoon by scores of 6-4 and 9-8 in eight innings. The losses drops the Cardinals to 19-21 overall and 10-12 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference while Truman State moves to 25-11, 17-5 in league play.

Truman State started strong with a solo home run from Lex VanNostrand which gave the Bulldogs the quick 1-0 lead in the top of the first. However, Jewell battled back and held a 3-1 advantage after two consecutive singles to start the bottom of the inning, followed by a Brooke Bernard home run.

The Bulldogs came back with a run in the second on a solo shot and added two more in the third to take a 4-3 lead.

After a rough first inning, Truman State starter Kindra Henze settled down while Jewell made a pitching change bringing in Shelby McGraw. The two teams traded zeros until the seventh inning when the Bulldogs blasted a two run home run to take a 6-3 lead.

Jewell battled in the bottom of the final frame as Bernard led off the inning with a double and came around to score on a double by Phoebe Dabbour to make it 4-3 but a pop up would end the rally.

The Cardinals were outhit ten to eight led by two each from Bernard, Dabbour, Maddie Greenstreet..

McGraw took the loss going five innings in relief, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits while striking out five. Starter Taylor Friesen went two-plus innings allowing three earned runs on four hits.

In the nightcap it was again Truman State who jumped out with a big first inning as two singles preceded a three run home run from Cate Simon.

Jewell got a run back on a lead off bomb from sophomore Madi Giles. The two squads went back and forth as each scored a run in the second frame, before the Bulldogs separated themselves with a two run third inning to take a 6-2 lead.

The Cardinals exploded in the fourth for four runs, which came on two big hits. Bernard and McGraw led off the bottom of the frame with back-to-back walks before Nona Pauline sent one of her two doubles to right center scoring Bernard. Dabbour then stepped to plate and blasted her fourth home run of the season, a three run shot, to tie the game at six.

Truman State took a 8-6 lead after the next half inning scoring two runs on three hits and a Cardinal error, but Jewell did not go quietly as Greenstreet reached on an error, followed by a single to right center from Bernard to put two in scoring position. Again it was Pauline doubling to right center scoring both runners to tie the game at eight.

Jewell nearly had a walk off win in the seventh as Pauline sent another sharply hit ball to right field with two on base, but the Cardinal runner was gunned down at the plate by a strong throw from Truman State's Michaela Mooney to force extra innings.

After McGraw cruised through the first two batters in the top of the eighth, Bulldog freshman Christa Reisinger sent a solo home run over the left field fence to put Truman State on top 9-8.

The Cardinals threatened in the bottom of the frame as Aerin Creamer drew a walk with two outs but a line drive was snagged by the second baseman to end the game.

Pauline enjoyed a big day going 4-4 with two doubles, three RBI, and two runs. The Cardinals were outhit 12-8.

McGraw took the loss, again in relief, going 5.2 innings, allowing two earned runs, on five hits, and two walks, with five strikeouts. Henze earned both wins for Truman State.

To stay sharp during the week the Cardinals typically play a midweek non-conference opponent and will continue that pattern this week as they will play host to the Jennies of Central Missouri on Wednesday afternoon at 3:00 p.m.
