Cardinals Walk Off in Game Two for Split with Central Missouri

Phoebe Dabbour smashed an RBI single to left field with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning in game two to push the William Jewell softball team to a non-conference split with Central Missouri Wednesday evening in Liberty, Mo. The Cardinals fell in game one 8-3. The split takes Jewell to 20-22 overall while the Jennies move to 23-23.

In the opener, Jewell jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning on three hits. Maddie Greenstreet doubled, followed by walks to Brooke Bernard and Shelby McGraw before Dabbour came through with a two RBI single. Senior Morgan Olson then recorded her 13th RBI of the season with a single up the middle.

The Jennies made a quick pitching change bringing on freshman Emily Robinson who shut down the Cardinal offense going 6.1 innings of relief to earn the win. After Jewell starter Shelby McGraw held the Jennies quiet through the first three innings, UCM exploded for seven runs on six hits and two errors in the top of the fourth to pull in front 7-3.

UCM added a run in the seventh to earn the 8-3 win after out hitting Jewell 8-5. Madi Giles recorded two hits, while Bernard reached twice on walks.

McGraw was saddled with the loss, tossing all seven innings, allowing seven earned runs on on eight hits, but tied her career-high with eight strikeouts.

In the nightcap, Jewell managed just two hits in the first inning and two-thirds, but both were home runs, coming off the bats of Greenstreet and Dabbour to put Jewell in front 2-0. The Cardinals weren't done though in the bottom of the second as McGraw and Creamer walked and came around to score on a double to center field by Giles.

Central Missouri came alive in the top of the third, scoring three runs on three hits to pull within a run and tied the game at four in the following inning on a single by Hailey Crabtree.

Senior Aerin Creamer pushed Jewell back in front with a two run blast to left field but the Jennies matched that shot with one of their own by Alex Leonhart to tie the game once again at six-all in the top of the fifth.

In the bottom of the frame the Cardinals got back-to-back singles from Greenstreet and Bernard to put two on with no outs, but a fly out and double play ended the rally.

UCM made a threat in the sixth putting two runners on before McGraw came on to pitch for the Cardinals and forced a fielder's choice to end the inning.

McGraw held the Jennies quiet in the top of the seventh giving Jewell an opportunity for the walk off win. Giles sent a leadoff single up the middle followed by a walk to Greenstreet and a single to Bernard to load the bases with no outs. A fly ball recorded the first out and a runner being tagged out at the plate gave the Cardinals two away but still with two runners in scoring position. Dabbour came through with a walk off single to left field to give Jewell the 7-6 win.

In game two, Giles, Greenstreet, Bernard, Dabbour, and McGraw all posted two hits. Giles and Dabbour accounted for two RBI each while Greenstreet and McGraw scored two runs. The Cardinals outhit UCM 11-9.

McGraw earned the win in the circle going one and one-third inning in relief, allowing just one base runner. The starter Biondo, allowed five earned runs on nine hits, while posting seven strikeouts.

Up next, Jewell will return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play as they travel to Wisconsin Parkside on Saturday, followed by a matchup with Lewis on Sunday.
