Cole Broadcasts 1,000th Jewell Athletic Event

Director of Sports Broadcasting Rick Cole aired his 1,000th William Jewell athletic event on Wednesday evening during a split between Jewell softball and Central Missouri.

Cole, who has been with the department since the 2005-06 school year, oversaw the inception of the William Jewell College Sports Network which is celebrating its tenth year on the air. On July 1, 2011 he was moved into a full time role with the college and will be honored later this week for his fifth year of service.

Live video streaming of Cardinal home events in football, soccer, volleyball, men's and women's basketball, baseball and softball became a reality in 2011 as well as the live broadcast of Jewell's graduation in 2012 and 2013. During the winter of 2012 live swimming was added to the production schedule followed by the first live tennis broadcast in January of 2015.

There have been approximately 1,500 videos posted to the Jewell athletic website, produced by Cole and the WJCSN. In 2011-12 the Cardinals were the winner of the Great Lakes Valley Conference Award of Excellence for their participation in coverage of a significant community engagement activity, after a video of the event, which was produced by Cole, was submitted to the conference.

Along with his work at Jewell, Cole has also been involved in the broadcasts and productions on a conference and regional level, working men's soccer, basketball, tennis, and track and field.

Cole has brought the network from a one man show to a multi-camera event during his time at the helm. Beginning in the 2011-12 school year, the WJCSN featured as many as six different cameras to cover events and has expanded to slow-motion replays and on-screen graphics as well.

"I think our online telecasts are the best in the GLVC" said Cole. "It's a tribute to the College for allowing me to produce coverage in the way I think it suits us best, and to the students at Jewell for executing the plan."

This weekend, Cole will lead a team of Jewell students in a multi-camera broadcast of the Darrel Gourley Open which features over 850 track and field student athletes, followed by the live broadcast of the GLVC Outdoor Track and Field Championships in May.
