In a Great Lakes Valley Conference doubleheader on Sunday afternoon, the William Jewell College baseball team dropped a pair of games to Maryville University at Lou Brock Field in St. Charles, Mo. The Cardinals fell 8-3 in game one, followed by a 5-4 setback in the second game as Maryville picked up the sweep.
The Cardinals got on the board with two runs in the top of the first after loading the bases with no one out.
Drew Standifer scored on a wild pitch and
Dane Erbsts' sacrifice fly scored
Garrett McKinzie for the 2-0 edge. Maryville tied the game in the bottom of the first though, taking advantage of a passed ball for their first run.
Coleman Waheed continued his hot streak as he drove home a run in the second to give Jewell a 3-2 lead but it was all Maryville from there.
The Saints scored six in the bottom of the third and were able to hold the Cardinals scoreless from there.
Standifer finished 2-for-4 with a run scored and
Brendan Beatty (0-1) took the loss going 2.2 innings.
In game two, the Cardinals got on the board in the fourth on a triple from Erbst that scored McKinzie to give Jewell a 1-0 lead. The Saints tied it with a single run in the bottom of the sixth only to see Jewell rally in the seventh. Travis Foerschler drove in two with a triple and two batters later Waheed drove home Foerschelr with a double to left field.
The Cardinals appeared to be in control up 4-1 heading to the bottom of the eighth.
The Saints had other plans as they rallied for four runs off five hits and two Cardinal errors to take a 5-4 lead heading to the ninth.
Jesse Gray led off the inning with a double and advanced to third on a single from Foershcler. Gray was then thrown out at home on a fielder's choice and Maryville was able to retire Waheed and Standifer to end the game.
Senior
Billy Kirkpatrick took the hard-luck loss for the Cardinals, going 7.2 innings, allowing 10 hits and five runs (two earned) to fall to 3-3 on the year.
With the pair of losses today, Jewell drops to 22-16 overall and 7-9 in GLVC play on the season, while Maryville improves to 17-19 and 8-8.
The Cardinals will host Missouri S&T in a four game series starting Saturday, April 23. First pitch is set for 12:00 p.m.
