Cardinals Post 26 Hits In Sweep of Quincy

The William Jewell softball team swept a double header from Quincy University on Saturday afternoon in Liberty, Mo. by scores of 10-4 and 6-1. The sweep takes the Cardinals to 19-19 on the season and 10-10 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference as well as maintaining their hold on the eighth spot in the league standings. The Hawks drop to 12-20 and 7-12 in the GLVC.

The Cardinals brought the bats out early against the Hawks scoring a run after just four batters as Brooke Bernard singled and came around to score on a double from Shelby McGraw.

Jewell scored three in the second and tacked on five more in the third before Quincy finally got on the board with three runs in the top of the fourth inning after Jewell committed two errors in the frame.

The Hawks continued to chip away scoring another run in the top of the fifth to pull within 9-4, before Jewell responded with a run in the fifth. Megan Barnes walked and stole second before scoring on a single from Madi Giles.

Jewell outhit the Hawks 12 to seven, including five doubles and posting nine hits through the first three innings. The Cardinals were led by Giles who went 3-4 at the plate with two doubles, three RBI, and a run. McGraw also posted two doubles while Maddie Greenstreet had two RBI.

McGraw went all seven innings, allowing just two earned runs on seven hits while striking out three to earn her twelfth win of the season.

In game two the Cardinals went quietly in the first inning before scoring a single run in each of the following four frames, followed by two more in the sixth to take the 6-1 win.

In the bottom of the second inning Pauline singled and stole second base to lead off the frame. Anna Biondo and Aerin Creamer then went back-to-back with bunt singles to score Pauline and take an early 1-0 lead.

In the following inning Greenstreet sent a solo home run over the left centerfield wall to push the Jewell lead to 2-0. The Cards threatened to break the game open following the long ball as they loaded the bases with no outs on consecutive singles from Bernard, McGraw, and Pauline. However, Quincy's Tiffany Harbison killed the rally with three quick outs.

The Cardinals added a run in the fifth on an RBI single from Bernard, followed by a run in the sixth on a solo home run from Pauline, her fifth of the season.

The Cardinals followed up with two runs in the sixth on back-to-back shots from Greenstreet and Bernard to give Jewell a comfortable 6-1 lead heading into the final frame.

Jewell banged out 14 hits in game two and 26 total on the day compared to just 16 for Quincy.

Bernard and Pauline each totaled three hits while Greenstreet and Biondo had two a piece in the nightcap.

Biondo earned the win in the circle to move to 5-4 on the season after tossing all seven innings, allowing eight hits, one run, and striking out six batters.

The Cardinals return to action tomorrow as they play host to Truman State for a double header beginning at 12:00 p.m.
