The William Jewell College baseball team wrapped up their regular season today with a doubleheader against Great Lakes Valley Conference opponent No. 10 Quincy University. The Cardinals split the Saturday doubleheader but took the series 3-1. The Cards won game one 11-9 and dropped game two 8-1. Jewell moves to 30-20 overall and 15-13 in GLVC play. Quincy is now 35-14 and 18-10 in league play. The Cardinals also honored their 11 seniors today between games.
In game one, the Cardinals offense came alive scoring one in the first, one in the second and two in the third.
In the fourth, the Cardinals batted around and scored seven runs. The inning started with two walks and a wild pitch followed by
Garrett McKinzie being hit by a pitch to load the bases.
Andrew Miller who was hit in a previous at bat then hit a ground rule double over the right field fence that scored two.
Dane Erbst was then hit by a pitch and
Dylan Christie followed with another two-run double for the Cardinals. Travis Foershcler got in on the act and hit his own two-run double and
Mike Leeper's sacrifice fly put Jewell up 11-2.
Quincy answered with a rally of their own scoring five in the top of the sixth in which they chased Jewell starter
Garret Smith from the game.
Chris Mancha replaced Smith but gave up three runs including two homers one in the sixth and one in the seventh with one out.
Vijay Patel then entered the game and closed the door to earn his second save of the year.
Smith (3-3) earned the win going 5 innings giving up five hits and six runs (four earned) while striking out six Hawk batters.
Offensively, McKinzie, Miller and Erbst all finished with two hits and Christie led Jewell with three RBI's.
Quincy loaded the bases with no outs in the top of the first in game two but only scored two runs.
Jewell followed with a two-out double from Erbst that scored
Drew Standifer to cut the lead 2-1. Unfortunately, it would be the only run the Cards would score in game two.
Quincy would tack on two in the fourth, one in the fifth and three in the seventh and rode the arm of pitcher Mark Niebrugge who earned his fourth victory of the year. Niebrugge tossed 8 innings only giving up 5 hits and one run while striking out four.
Senior
Billy Kirkpatrick (5-4) was saddled with the loss. He went 7 innings giving up 12 hits and gave up 8 runs (7 earned).
Miller and Standifer each finished with two hits and Erbst drove home the Cardinals' only run of the game.
The Cardinals will await the results of other GLVC games being played today and tomorrow to see if they advance to the GLVC Conference Tournament next week.
