The William Jewell College men's soccer team fell 3-2 (OT) to Maryville University in a closely contested, Great Lakes Valley Conference match on Friday afternoon.
The Cardinals (2-4, 2-3 GLVC) were outshot 19-9 overall and Maryville (4-3, 1-3 GLVC) held a 14-4 advantage in corner kicks on the afternoon.
The Saints struck first, scoring in the fourth minute as Henry Rynd found the back of the net to earn his first goal of the year and gave Maryville a 1-0 lead.
Just moments later, Helmut Florencia scored his third goal of the season to push the Saints lead to 2-0 at the 6:10 mark of the first half.
Maryville held a 2-0 lead at halftime, recording eight shots and nine corner kicks overall in the first half.
The Cardinals responded late in the game scoring two goals in the span of five minutes to send the game into overtime. Jewell first got on the board when
Aaron Froehlich headed in his first goal of the season off a pass from
Quinton Conyers at the 80:51 mark to cut the lead to 2-1.
Five minutes later
Brett Jackson tied the game at two when he headed a shot from Froehlich to the upper corner on a cross from the left.
Maryville ended the game two minutes into the overtime period on a goal from Pontus Gitselov.
The Cardinals will look to regroup as they travel to University of Missouri-St. Louis on Sunday to take on the Tritons in a GLVC match beginning at 2:30p.m.
