Offense was the name of the game Saturday in Rapid City, South Dakota, as William Jewell College opened their 2016 football season by scoring 41 points. On this day, however, it was not enough as South Dakota School of Mines & Technology bested Jewell 64-41.
It looked like turnovers and defense would rule early, as a
Kolby Fennewald interception went 25 yards for a Cardinal touchdown on the first play from scrimmage, and a fumbled kick return led to a Mines touchdown drive early in the first quarter; those were the only turnovers on the day.
The offense soon began to dominate on both sides, as there were four touchdowns scored in the first four minutes of play, 10 touchdowns scored in the first half, and 1065 total yard put up by the two squads.
After the Fennewald touchdown, Mines responded with an eight play drive and a two point conversion to take a lead they never relinquished. The Cardinals pulled to within 15-14 in the first quarter, but trailed 29-21 after the first quarter, 43-28 at half, and 50-35 at the end of three periods.
Jewell quarterback
Brad Strauss threw for 291 yards and three touchdowns, including a 69 yard scoring play to
Anthony Mullins, who had 123 yards receiving on a team high nine receptions. Strauss also ran for 98 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Cardinal rushers,
Cody Edwards had a touchdown reception for the Cardinals.
Quayde Bauman had nine tackles for Jewell.
The Cardinals had 458 yards of total offense while the Hardrockers had 607.
Jewell faces Doane University of Crete, Nebraska at home next Saturday.
