Cards Split Two Games to Close Capital Classic

The William Jewell College volleyball team defeated Ohio Valley in straight sets 25-22, 25-23, 25-16 Saturday morning before dropping a four-set game to Upper Iowa 25-19, 25-20, 28-26, 25-19. The Cardinals end their first weekend of play with an overall record of 2-2.

The first game of the day against Ohio Valley was the second consecutive win for the Cardinals and the first three-set sweep since October 17, 2014.

Jewell jumped out to a 4-1 lead behind kills from Paige Cunningham and Olivia Johnston. The remainder of the first set was a back and forth affair, each team with a nearly equal amount of kills as errors. The Cards were aided by two Scot errors and kills from Amy Lindhorst and Leslie Booth to close the set 25-22.

The second set was another back-and-forth affair until two kills from Cunningham gave Jewell the 25-23 win. In set three Jewell opened up a 10-5 lead and never looked back taking the set 25-16.

The Cards led in nearly every category including holding Ohio Valley to a -.011 attack percentage. In another well-balanced game, Cunningham and Leslie Booth each posted eight kills while Johnston collected six. Alix Weigel grabbed 23 assists while Emery Driskel posted five blocks.

In game two Jewell grabbed a 25-19 opening set win over Upper Iowa but dropped the following three to fall 3-1. The Cardinals enjoyed a more productive game both offensively and defensively but struggled with serve recieve as the Peacocks totaled eight service aces.

Stefanie Richterkessing posted a double-double of 12 kills and 17 digs while Grace Miller added 11 kills and two blocks. Booth continued to impress early in her sophomore season, as she added ten kills against the Peacocks.

Defensively, Olivia Tolberd tied her career high with 27 digs while freshman defensive specialist Lauren Johnson added 15 digs and two aces. Setters, Weigel and Lindhorst were balanced in assists posting 27 and 26 respectively.

Following the conclusion of the weekend, Richterkessing was named to the All-Tournament Team.

Up next the Cards with travel to the Sioux Falls Invitational next weekend where they will play four matches with South Dakota Mines, Sioux Falls, Bemidji Sate, and Minnesota-Crookston.
