Slominski Picks Up 400th Win As Cards Defeat Prairie Stars

Box Score William Jewell College women's basketball coach Jill Slominski picked up her 400th win as the Cardinals overcame an eight point deficit late in the fourth quarter to record a 62-55 Great Lakes Valley Conference win over University of Illinois-Springfield (UIS) on Thursday evening at the Mabee Center.

With the win the Cards move to 6-7 overall and 3-3 in the GLVC.  The loss moves the Prairie Stars to 7-6 overall and 1-4 in league play.

UIS led Jewell 12-9 after the first quarter before the Cards outscored them 17-9 in the second and led 26-21 at the half.

The Prairie Stars outscored the Cards 21-11 in the third and went into the fourth leading 42-37.

UIS appeared to be in control and led by as many as eight in the fourth when Jewell went on a 5-0 run keyed by a three pointer from Lindsey McCoy which cut the lead to three with just over four minutes to play.

After the media timeout Maddie Nelson came up with a huge three point play that tied the score 50-50.

The Prairie Stars took a one point lead after hitting one of two from the free throw line before Nelson came up with another three point play to put Jewell up by two.  Jewell capitalized on another UIS turnover and McCoy drained another three that put Jewell up 56-51 with 1:40 to play.

The Cards came up big from the free throw line to put the game away.

Nelson and McCoy were the only Cardinal in double figures and  Nelson led all scores with 18.  McCoy came off the bench and chipped in 10 points including 2-of-3 from three-point land.

The Cardinals will continue GLVC play when they host McKendree University on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
