The William Jewell College men's basketball team overcame a 17 point second half deficit and came away with a 66-63 win over Maryville University on Thursday night at the Mabee Center. It was the Cardinals first Great Lakes Valley Conference win since last February when Jewell won at Rockhurst. The Cardinals move to 5-12 overall and 1-8 in the GLVC while Maryville falls to 7-15 and 1-9 in league play.
The first half saw the Cardinals struggle from the field shooting only 27 percent and scoring only 22 points in the first half and trailed by nine at the break.
The Saints built their 17 point lead with 15:23 to play before the Cards went on a 23-6 run to tie the game 51-51.
Patrick Whelan found his stroke in the second half as he scored 22 of his game high 31 in the second half. Jewell also drained 13 of 14 free throws in the second half and held Maryville to 33 percent shooting in the half.
Guards
Jorge Perez-Laham and
Easton Koch were the only other players in double figures with 14 and 11 respectively.
The Cardinals will continue their homestand on Saturday when they host University of Missouri-St. Louis at 3:00 p.m.
