The William Jewell College football team traveled to Kingsville, Texas, to take on Texas A&M Kingsville in the 2017 season finale on Saturday night. The Cardinals got off to a strong start leading 13-0 and 16-7 before Kingsville scored 24 unanswered points to lead 31-16. Jewell answered with 19 unanswered of their own before giving up the final touchdown with a minute to play. The Cardinals did drive all the way down to the Javelina's 10 yard line but Brad Strauss' pass on the final play was ruled incomplete and Kingsville escaped with a 34-31 win. The loss drops Jewell to a final overall record of 2-9 while Texas A&M-Kingsville improves to 4-7.
HOW IT HAPPENED
1Q (14:03) The Cards struck first when running back Trejuan Mask took a pass from Brad Strauss and scampered in from 54 yards away on the games second play from scrimmage to put Jewell up 7-0.
1Q (8:54) Dalton Dye increased the Jewell lead to 10-0 with a 24-yard field goal.
2Q (1:09) Dye again connected this time from 28 yards away and the Cards led 13-0.
2Q (0:56) Jordan Thomas scored the first of his four touchdowns this one via a 100-yard kick off return and Kingsville trailed 13-7.
2Q (0:00) Dye hit a career long 44-yard field goal to give Jewell a 16-7 halftime lead.
3Q (7:09) Julio De la Garza's field goal from 37 yards out cut Jewell's lead to 16-10.
3Q (2:30) Kingsville quarterback Cade Dyal found Thomas for a 7-yard score to give Kingsville their first lead of the day 17-16.
4Q (12:27) Dyal again found Thomas this time from two yards out and the Javelina's built a 24-16 lead.
4Q (9:21) Jeff Carr rushed in from five yards away and Kingsville added to their lead 31-16.
4Q (8:02) Strauss got Jewell back on the board with a 50-yard touchdown run to cut the lead 31-23.
4Q (5:09) Mask scored his second touchdown of the game when he took a pass from Strauss and found the endzone from 17 yards away. Mask also converted the two-point conversion and the Cards found themselves tied 31-31.
4Q (1:56) Dye bested his earlier career long of 44 by connecting from 45 to give Jewell a 34-31 lead.
4Q (1:00) Thomas scored his last touchdown of the game which ended up being the game winner when he hauled in a 34-yard touchdown pass from Dyal.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
Strauss, playing his final game as a Cardinal, led Jewell in rushing with 108 yards on 17 carries. He also threw for 367 yards and two touchdowns.
Mask led Jewell in receiving with four catches for 105 yards and two scores.
Defensively,
Orlando Ward had 10 tackles on the night while Quayde Bauman, Jack Gordon and Brock Geiz each finished with 8.
TURNING POINT
Trailing 34-31 with a one minute to play, Kingsville struck on a game winning 34 yard touchdown pass from Dyal to Thomas.
