The William Jewell women's basketball team dropped a 59-35 contest to Metropolitan State-Denver to close the Holiday Inn Cherry Creek Classic on Saturday evening in Denver, Colo. With the loss, the Cardinals fall to 2-4 on the season.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1Q: After grabbing a 7-3 lead in the first four minutes of the contest Jewell saw the Roadrunners go on a 12-0 run to take a 16-7 advantage with just over two minutes to play in the opening quarter. Adriana Rodriguez and Hayden Butler each hit one of two free throws to pull the Cardinals within 16-9 after the first ten minutes.
- 2Q: Jewell used a 7-0 run late in the second quarter to pull within four of MSU-Denver at 23-19 after a jump shot from Sydney Offield. The Roadrunners responded with a 7-2 run of their own to close the half leading 30-21.
- 3Q: Neither team could get in a rhythm in the third quarter as better than three minutes combined passed without a point scored. A layup from Rodriguez with 4:46 remaining in the frame pulled Jewell back within four at 33-29 only to see MSUD close the quarter on a 12-4 run.
- 4Q: The Cards managed just two points in the fourth quarter as the Roadrunners built their lead to the final of 59-35.
INSIDE THE BOXSCORE
- Both teams struggled on the offensive end as Jewell shot just 24 percent from the floor while MSU-Denver hit just 32.6 percent of their shots.
- The Roadrunners took advantage of 28 fouls committed by the Cardinals by hitting 27-33 free throws.
TURNING POINT
- A three point shot from MSU-Denver's Mikala Gordon with 1:02 remaining in the third quarter kick started the run that put the game out of reach for the Cardinals.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Katie Finn hit 3-of-6 three point shots and was the only Jewell player in double figures with 11 points.
- Offield was tops for the Cardinals with seven rebounds.
- Ashley Pitrof grabbed a career-high four steals in just 13 minutes of play.

The Cardinals return home next weekend to open Great Lakes Valley Conference play as they host Maryville on Thursday evening at 5:30 p.m. followed by a match up with Quincy on Saturday afternoon.
