Second Half Rally Propels Cards to GLVC Opening Win over Maryville

The William Jewell women's basketball team opened Great Lakes Valley Conference play with a 63-52 win over Maryville University on Thursday evening. With the win, the Cardinals move to 3-4 on the season and 1-0 in the GLVC.

HOW IT HAPPENED
  • 1Q: The Cardinals took and early 4-0 lead on a layup from Natalie Closser at the 7:15 mark of the opening quarter. From there it was nearly six minutes until the next point as Hayden Butler hit two free throws to end the drought and pull Jewell within 9-6.
  • 2Q: The offensive struggles continued in the second quarter as Closser again hit a shot at the start of the frame followed by nearly three minutes of no baskets. Sydney Offield connected on four free throws down the stretch to keep Jewell close and end the half trailing just 23-17.
  • 3Q: The Cardinals opened the second half with a 12-2 run to go back on top 29-25 and force a Maryville timeout. Although the Saints pulled within one with under four minutes remaining in the quarter, a three point shot from Annemarie Boeh sparked a run that led Jewell to their biggest lead of the night 45-35 heading into the final ten minutes.
  • 4Q: The Saints again put together a small rally to pull within five as Jewell went nearly five minutes without a field goal. A three from Offield pushed the lead back to nine with just under four minutes to play. The Cards hit seven of eight free throws in the final minute to seal the victory
