The William Jewell women's basketball team used a strong second half rally to defeat Quincy University 61-52 on Saturday afternoon in the Mabee Center. The win moves the Cardinals to 4-4 on the season and 2-0 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
HOW IT HAPPENED
- 1Q: A three pointer by Annemarie Boeh put Jewell on top early 8-5, but that would be all the Cardinals could manage in the opening ten minutes as they trailed 12-8 after one quarter.
- 2Q: The Hawks expanded their lead as large as 11 before a three point shot from Katie Finn at the 7:49 mark of the second quarter finally ending the scoring drought. A 7-0 run, keyed by five points from Hayden Butler, pulled Jewell within 23-18 and forced a Quincy timeout. Both teams went more than three minutes without scoring before the Hawks brought the lead back to eight to close the half at 28-20.
- 3Q: Just under three minutes into the half the Hawks used 4-0 run to grab their biggest lead of the day at 32-20 before the Cardinals rallied. Jewell closed the quarter by scoring the Hawks 16-6.
- 4Q: The offense continued to roll in the fourth quarter as Butler scored the first five points for the Cards to tie the game at 41-41. A layup from Kayla Harrell on the following possession gave Jewell their first lead since early in the first quarter. The Cardinals hit five of six free throws down the stretch to seal the win.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
- The Cardinal bench outscored Quincy's bench 23-15.
- Jewell used the inside game to their advantage scoring 24 points the paint compared to just six by the Hawks.
- The Cardinals shot just 24 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes before recovering to post a 45 percent clip in the second half.
TURNING POINT
- Ashley Pitrof scored back-to-back baskets on a rebound put back followed by a big three pointer to give Jewell a lead (54-51) they did not relinquish.
LEADERS OF THE FLIGHT
- Harrell led the Cardinals with a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds, which tied her career high.
- Butler and Finn also finished in double figures with 13 (season high) and 10 points respectively.
- Sydney Offield also pulled down seven boards
YOU SHOULD NOTE
- This is the second consecutive season Jewell has started GLVC play with wins in the first two games.
