Men's Basketball Rallies for Overtime Road Win At Saint Joseph's

Box Score Patrick Whelan drained two free-throws with six seconds remaining in overtime that helped the William Jewell College men's basketball team overcome a second half deficit to defeat Saint Joseph's College in Great Lakes Valley Conference action on Saturday afternoon.

The win moves the Cardinals to 7-15 overall and 3-11 in GLVC play while the Pumas fall to 9-16 overall and 3-12 in league play.

Saint Joseph's opened up on an 18-6 run in the first four minutes of the game and continued to dominate the first half and led by as many as 17 with 3:22 to play.  The Cardinals were able to pull within 12 at the break 54-42.

The Puma's built another 12 point lead with 12:20 to play before Jewell went on a 24-12 run to tie the game 84-84 with just over six minutes to play.  Whelan keyed the run with two three-pointers and gave Jewell their first lead of the game with another three 84-81.  The Cards built a lead as big as five before the action went back and forth in regulation.

Saint Joseph's CJ Hardaway put the Puma's up by two with two free throws with 15 seconds left.  Senior Jorge Perez-Laham atoned for his foul on Hardaway by knocking down two free throws of his own to tie the game 102-102 at the end of regulation.

With the game tied at 106 with just over three minutes in overtime the Cardinals went on a 4-0 run and were able to hang on to the lead with clutch free throw shooting down the stretch.

Whelan led six different Cardinals in double figures with 31 points including 11-of-12 from the free throw line.  Perez-Laham (27 points), Matt Lassen (17 points), Larry Fitzgerald (16 points), Easton Koch (12 points), and Emil Ostafiicuic (11 points) were the other Cardinals in double figures.

The Cardinals return to the Mabee Center on Monday, February 13 when they take on McKendree University at 7:30 p.m.
