Redshirt sophomore guard
Kayla Harrell poured in a career-high 28 points on Saturday to lead the William Jewell women's basketball team past Quincy 77-69. This was the final regular season road game as Jewell won three of the last four road contests after starting the year 0-10. Overall the Cardinals are 13-12 and 9-8 in the Great Lakes Valley Conference.
Harrell was hot from the very beginning as she was in double-figures with 12 points by the end of the first quarter, where the Cardinals led 23-15.
Katie Finn hit a three point shot, followed by two free throws from Harrell to give Jewell a 12 point lead at the break at 39-27.
In the opening half Jewell shot 44 percent from the floor and a hot 46 percent from behind the arc, hitting six-of-13 attempts, five of which came off the hands of Finn and Harrell.
After the break, the Hawks pulled within two on a three from Nikia Edom at the 2:04 mark before the Cardinals closed the period on a 7-0 run, capped by another three from Finn to lead it 63-54 after three complete.
Jewell stifled any rally from Quincy as they matched the Hawks' five field goals with five of their own. The Cardinals led by double-digits with just a minute to play but allowed two lay ups in the final 60 seconds to bring the final to 77-69.
Along with her 28 points, Harrell also pulled down six rebounds, dished out three assists, and blocked two shots. Finn scored 15 on 5-of-8 from three point land to go along with four assists, while
Maddie Nelson added 14 points and four assists, and
Chris Keys chipped in ten points.
The Cardinals will wrap up the regular season and look to secure a spot in the GLVC Tournament next week as they host Rockhurst on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. Jewell will also honor the two women's basketball seniors
Maddie Nelson and
Chris Keys, along with nine representatives from the men's basketball program, and one cheerleader.Â
