William Jewell hit two buzzer beaters, one at the end of each half, to pull out the upset win over Rockhurst 84-80 on Thursday night in the Mabee Center. The Cardinals finish the 2016-17 season with an overall record of 9-17 and 5-13 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.
The first half came to a close in dramatic fashion as
Matt Lassen, one of seven Cardinal seniors to be honored prior to tip off, hit a shot from the free throw line at the opposite end of the court to pull Jewell within 39-34 at the break. See the shot in the video above,
or here.
Lassen continued his heroics in the second half, shooting 50 percent from the floor and hitting two big three pointers. After the break, the Cardinals quickly pulled themselves back into the game as four points from Lassen, along with buckets from Emil Ostafiicuic and
Patrick Whelan pushed Jewell from down five to up three at 42-39.
Rockhurst mounted a rally and went ahead by four (72-68), the largest second half lead of either team, on a three pointer from Alex Hagan at the 4:17 mark. The Hawks held their lead until a lay up from Osatfiicuic with 2:02 remaining knotted the score at 76. Rockhurst responded with back-to-back buckets and looked as though they would walk away victorious but the Cardinals had other plans. Whelan was fouled and hit two free throws prior to scoring a lay up with 30 seconds to go to once again tie the score at 80. A turnover by the Hawks with six seconds remaining gave Jewell the game-winning opportunity. After a Cardinal timeout, Whelan drove the lane, nearly uncontested, and put Jewell on top 82-80. Although the buzzer initially sounded, it was ruled that one second remained on the clock, giving the Hawks a last life. However, another Rockhurst turnover on the inbounds, allowed Whelan to step to the line and ice the game.
Lassen led all scorers with 23 points on 7-of-11 shooting, including 4-of-5 from behind the arc. Whelan added 20 while Ostafiicuic chipped in 16 points and seven boards.
Prior to the contest, Jewell honored their seven seniors who played their final collegiate game: Lassen,
Jorge Perez-Laham,
Austin Regier,
Simon Zajicek, Chris Morrison,
Javier De La Blanca, and
Larry Fitzgerald, along with student-assistant
Zach Starr, and manager
Daniela Marin.
