Cardinals Make Early Lead Stand, Defeat UW-Parkside 89-65

The William Jewell women's basketball team opened up a double-digit lead in the first half against UW-Parkside and never looked back as they downed the Rangers 89-65 on Saturday afternoon in the Mabee Center. The win takes the Cardinals to 9-11 overall and 5-7 in Great Lakes Valley Conference play.

The Cardinals used a 22-6 run during the second quarter to open a 26 point advantage, capped by a Hayden Butler three with just over a minute to play. Jewell had three players in double-figures by half time after shooting 63 percent from the floor and 47 percent from behind the three point line.

Butler capped the third quarter as well, hitting a layup just before the buzzer to push the Jewell lead to a game-high 39 to start the final period. The Rangers took advantage of multiple turnovers late in the fourth quarter to pull within 23 but the Cardinals proved to be too much as they cruised to the 24 point win.

Kayla Harrell posted her first double-double of the season with a game-high 18 points and ten rebounds. Maddie Nelson and Katie Finn followed with 15 points a piece, with Nelson also collecting seven rebounds and five assists while Finn added six assists. Butler chipped in 11 points while Lindsey McCoy added ten in just ten minutes of play.

Up next the Cardinals head back out on the road for a two-game swing next weekend at Saint Joseph's and Indianapolis.
