The William Jewell Softball team dropped a double header to Southwest Baptist on Wednesday afternoon on the road in Bolivar, Mo. The Cardinals fell by scores of 7-0 and 5-4 to drop to 5-9 overall.

The opener was all Southwest Baptist as the Bearcats scored in the second, third, and fourth innings. The Cardinals managed just two hits off SBU starter Kacey Ayers (10-2), those coming off the bats of
Brooke Bernard and
Madesen Gage.Â
Jewell starter
Sarah Lewis took the loss to fall to 1-2 on the season after allowing six earned runs.
Cheyenne Carpenter also went 3 1-3 innings, giving up just two hits and one earned run.Â

In the nightcap, the Cardinals nearly pulled off the comeback win as they trailed by three runs and were down to their last out before tying the game at four.Â
Southwest Baptist jumped out to a 4-1 lead entering the top of the seventh inning. With two outs,
Kelsey Morgan doubled to right field and scored on a single through the left side by Bernard.
Gabby Brown came on to pinch run for Bernard and scored on
Emily Hoover's team leading fourth home run of the year which tied the game at four.Â
The Bearcats responded by recording three consecutive singles in the bottom of the frame to score a run a take the 5-4 win.Â
The Cardinals outhit SBU 11-9 with Hoover, Bernard,
Madelynne Greenstreet, and
Sydne Brashear each posting two hits. Morgan also reached base three times with a double and two walks.Â
Greenstreet took the loss, allowing a run on four hits.
Anna Biondo also tossed five innings, striking out three.Â
The Cardinals will be back in action on Thursday as they host Newman in the 2017 home opener. First pitch of the double header is set for 2:00 p.m.Â
