The William Jewell College baseball team wrapped up their three game set with Northern State University this afternoon at Talley Stadium in Liberty, Mo., and took the rubber game by a score of 10-5.
The Cardinals improve to 6-9 overall while NSU falls to 7-5.
In a series that had featured 43 runs in two games the first three innings were looking as if another slug fest was in order.
The Cards got on the board first in the bottom of the first scoring two runs on an error and a hit.Â
Jewell then added to their lead in the second scoring six runs.Â
Ben Pautler hit his first career homerun, a solo shot, with one out in the inning.Â
Garrett McKinzie came up three batters later with two runners aboard a launched his third round tripper of the season, a three-run shot, that put Jewell up 6-0.Â
Dylan Christie followed with his first homerun of the season to the opposite field in left center that put the Cards up 7-0. Jewell added another run to take what seemed a commanding 8-0 lead.Â
In the top of the third the Wolves bats came alive much like they have done all series long. With two outs, and two on Jack Schmidt pounded a ball into the wind over the left field fence that cut Jewell's lead 8-3. NSU would add another run to put them within striking distance at 8-4.
From there Jewell first-year starter
Mack Stephenson settled in and held the Wolves scoreless for four out of his next five innings only giving up a single run in the fourth.
McKinzie would add some insurance in the bottom of the eighth hitting his second homerun of the game this time a two-run shot that gave Jewell the winning 10-5 margin.
Stephenson, provided the Cardinals some much needed innings today on the mound going eight, giving up six hits, and five runs while striking out five to pick up his second win of the season.
Rylan Shimer only lasted 1.2 innings and took his second loss of the year for NSU.Â
McKinzie finished 3-for-5 with five RBI's and Christie finished 3-for-4 with two RBI's.Â
