Cardinals Salvage Split at Newman with 6-2 Win

The William Jewell softball team earned a 6-2 win in game two of a double-header to salvage a split at Newman University on Saturday afternoon. The Cardinals now stand 5-7 overall to close the early season 12 game road trip.

In the night cap, Jewell struck first as Brooke Bernard led off the fourth inning with a single and was pinch ran for by freshman Gabby Brown. Brown then came around to score on an RBI double to right center from Ashlyn Sutton

The Cardinals added a run in the next inning as Lindsay Glynn walked, stole two bases, and scored on an single from Madi Giles. Jewell loaded the bases later in the frame but a fielder's choice ended the threat. 

Jewell blew the game open in the top of the seventh, scoring four runs on four hits. With two outs and two on base, Bernard started a string of four consecutive RBI singles to extend the Cardinal lead to 6-0, needing just three outs for the win. 

The Jets got on the board with a two runs on four hits in the bottom of the frame but a ground ball to second base ended the game and gave Jewell their fifth win of the year. 

Bernard and Sutton led the Cardinals with two hits a piece, Sutton also grabbed two RBI. 

Freshman Sarah Lewis earned her first win of the season, going all seven innings, allowing just two earned runs on ten hits, while striking out four. 


GAME ONE | Newman 10 - Jewell 4
In the opener, Jewell fell behind early and could not recover as the Jets scored runs in five different innings on their way to the 10-4 win. 

Newman held a 3-0 lead after one inning before the Cardinals mounted a rally and tied the game in the top of the second. Emily Hoover blasted a solo home run, her third of the season, to put Jewell on the board. Glynn then tied the game, ripping a triple down the left field line to score Sutton and Sydne Brashear, who each singled. 

The Jets regained the lead with two runs in the bottom of the frame and extended the advantage to 7-5 in the following inning. Newman added two runs in the fifth and another run in the sixth to take a 10-3 lead into the final inning where Glynn scored on a ground out RBI from Bernard to bring the score to the final of 10-4. 

The Cardinals were out-hit 15-6, with Brashear posting two. Along with Glynn's triple and Hoover's long ball, Bernard also posted an extra base hit with a fifth inning double. 

Sophomore Anna Biondo took the loss to drop to 4-3 on the season, allowing six earned runs on 13 hits with five strikeouts, in 4.2 innings of work. Cheyenne Carpenter appeared in 1.1 innings, allowing one earned run on two hits while striking out three. 

The Cardinals will host Northwest Missouri State on Wednesday in the 2017 home opener. First pitch of the double header is set for 1:00 p.m. and can be seen on the GLVC Sports Network.
