Cardinals Dominant in Sweep of Lincoln

The William Jewell softball team put together one of the most dominating performances of the season on Tuesday as they swept Lincoln University by scores of 7-1 and 12-0 in five innings. The Cardinals now stand at 19-17 overall while the Blue Tigers dropped to 5-33.

GAME ONE | Cardinals 7 - Lincoln 1
In the opening game of the afternoon Jewell put up an early lead as Sydne Brashear ripped the first pitch she saw up the middle to score Brooke Bernard who had singled. The Cardinals added a run in the following inning as Lindsay Glynn scored without a throw as the Blue Tigers attempted to pick off another Cardinal runner at second base.

Lincoln scratched a run across in the fifth inning before the Cardinals plated four in the bottom of the frame to push the lead to 6-1. Back-to-back singles from Bernard and Madi Giles put two on for Emily Hoover who blasted her 12th home run of the season off the scoreboard in left field. This long ball broke the Jewell record for home runs by a freshman, previously held by red shirt junior Kelsey Morgan (2014).

In the bottom of the sixth, Giles scored on a Bernard single up the middle to push the margin to the final of 7-1.

Anna Biondo was dominant in the circle once again, allowing just seven hits, zero earned runs, and tied her career high with nine strikeouts. The sophomore moved to 13-4 on the season and lowered her ERA to 1.73 which ranks sixth in the GLVC.

The Cardinals as a team out hit Lincoln 14-7 with Bernard and Brashear each posting three, while Hoover had two. Jewell also swiped three bases and turned two double plays in the opener.

GAME TWO | Cardinals 12 - Lincoln 0
In the nightcap, the Cards did even more damage, scoring a season-high 12 runs on 14 hits, including four extra base hits. Every active player on the Cardinal roster appeared in game, with the exceptions of the game one battery of Biondo and Gaby Brown

Jewell wasted no time getting on the board, scoring three runs on four hits in the opening frame. The top three batters in the order ripped consecutive singles and all came around to score. Madelynne Greenstreet crossed the plate on a wild pitch, followed by Giles and Bernard scoring on a double off the right center field fence from Brashear.

In the third, it was again Brashear who came through with an RBI single, followed by Taylor Alarcon's single to push the Cardinal lead to 5-0.

Jewell blew the game open in the following inning, scoring seven runs on five hits and one Lincoln error. Erika Carvan recorded her first career hit to lead off the frame, ripping a single to left field, followed by a home run from Giles. Maddi Cox followed up with her first career extra base hit, while Cheyenne Carpenter was hit by a pitch to earn her first RBI.

Sarah Lewis (5-5) got three consecutive outs in the top of the fifth to end the game early and earn her fifth win of the season. The freshman tossed a complete game, four-hit shutout while walking none.

Jewell again out hit the Blue Tigers 14-4 led by two a piece from Greenstreet, Giles, Bernard, and Brashear.
