Cardinals Split at Central Missouri

Playing the first of eight games this week, the William Jewell softball team earned a split on Monday afternoon at Central Missouri, falling 4-3 before taking the nightcap 1-0. The Cardinals are now 21-21 overall while UCM moves to 24-25.

GAME ONE | Central Missouri 4 - Cardinals 3
In the opener, the Jennies opened a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning that was quickly matched by the Cardinals. In the top of the third, Madi Giles and Brooke Bernard reached on consecutive errors followed by a walk to Emily Hoover. Sydne Brashear drew first blood for the Cardinals with a single through the right side before Madelynne Greenstreet sent a single the opposite way to put Jewell on top 3-2.

The Jennies tied the game in the fourth inning and eventually took the 4-3 win on a walk off in the bottom of the seventh.

Despite scoring three runs, the Cardinals were limited to just four hits while also drawing two base on balls. Sarah Lewis (6-7) took the loss in the circle after tossing the complete game, allowing three earned runs on eight hits while tying her career high with five strikeouts.

GAME TWO | Cardinals 1 - Central Missouri 0
In the nightcap it was a first inning triple off the bat of Bernard to plate Giles that accounted for all the scoring in a 1-0 pitcher's dual win.

Sophomore Anna Biondo returned to her dominant self, allowing just six hits while striking out six, to earn the victory on just 72 pitches.

UCM's Katie Giacone was equally as strong allowing Jewell just five hits, those off the bats of Bernard, Greenstreet, Brashear, and Kelsey Morgan

UP NEXT:
Jewell will return to Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Wednesday as they travel to crosstown rival Rockhurst for a make up game. First pitch of the double header is set for 2:00 p.m. The Cards will then host Lewis and UW-Parkside over the weekend at the Spratt Sports Complex. Saturday will also serve as Senior Day as the Cardinals will honor their lone 2017 senior Maddi Cox
