Box Score 2 The William Jewell softball team handed league leading Rockhurst just their fifth loss in Great Lakes Valley Conference play on Wednesday, taking the opener 6-2 before falling 9-1 in five innings. The Cardinals now stand at 22-22 overall and 11-11 in the GLVC.
GAME ONE | Cardinals 6 - Rockhurst 2
In the opener both teams were held quiet for the first two innings before Jewell busted out with four runs in the top of the third.
Madi Giles and
Brooke Bernard reached base with one before a single from
Sydne Brashear plated the Cardinal's first run. The next three runs scored on three Rockhurst miscues to make it 4-0 Jewell.
The Cardinals extended their lead to six runs in the top sixth as
Lindsay Glynn reached on another Rockhurst error and came around to score on a triple off the bat of Giles. Giles then scored on a single from
Emily Hoover's single.
The Hawks got on the board in the bottom half of the frame, scoring two runs on three hits to pull the score to the final of 6-2.
Giles and
Madelynne Greenstreet each posted three hits to lead the Cardinals who outhit Rockhurst 11-8.
In the circle
Anna Biondo earned the win to move to 14-6 on the season, tossing an eight hit complete game while striking out four.
GAME TWO | Rockhurst 9 - Cardinals 1
In the night cap, Jewell again jumped out to an early lead with
Sydne Brashear reaching on an error and scoring on a
Sarah Lewis single. From there it was all Rockhurst as the Hawks tied the game in the bottom fo the second before scoring five runs in the third, two in the fourth, and one in the fifth to take the 9-1 five-inning win.
After the offensive output in game one the Cardinals managed just three hits off Rockhurst starter Bridgette Sappington, those coming from Giles, Lewis, and
Kelsey Morgan.
Lewis took the loss to fall to 6-8, allowing five earned runs on six hits through three innings.
